For young lesbians sex couple, same-gender sex may be particularly challenging. They have a history of being discriminated against and are often stigmatized. While the gender equality movement has helped change some of these stereotypes, they are still prevalent.
Despite these barriers, many lesbian couples continue to engage in sexual activity. They may not always be able to afford the same types of health insurance as their straight counterparts, but they can take advantage of free or low-cost clinics and health services that cater to LGBTQ individuals. In addition, same-gender couples can benefit from access to legal marriage.
Relationship is truly a partnership
Some couples have been together for years and are thriving, but others are beginning to question whether their relationship is truly a partnership. For some, this means taking a step back and looking at their relationship from a new perspective.
It also might mean examining the way in which they make sense of and respond to their changing sexual relationships amid significant midlife events, such as ageing or the death of an important partner. Using interview data from 32 couples, we explored how these couples made sense of and responded to sex changes in the context of their relationships.
We examined how couples described their levels of sociosexuality and their commitment to a sexual relationship, as well as how they addressed sex-related stress and engagement in deliberate work to increase, maintain, or improve sex. We found that couples with high levels of sociosexuality reported higher levels of sex commitment.
While lesbian dyads with lower levels of sociosexuality reported less commitment to a sexual relationship, they did report more frequent sex and more frequent sex intensity than dyads with similar levels of sociosexuality. This suggests that lesbian dyads may have to exert more effort to find and sustain a sex partner than straight couples.
They may also have to spend more time pursuing sex with their partner, which could be a source of stress. This may be especially true for younger couples.
